While this is widely attributed to Comiskey Park in August, that can't be correct.
The original paperwork for the Studio Jam show says the syndicated broadcast was window of August 1 to August 15, 1979. If the show was recorded on the 5th (which is the correct date for the Comiskey Park show, not the 9th), there would not have been enough time to master the recording and do the tape duplication for the reel to reel tapes, much less ship them across the country to the radio stations.
There is also a blurb in the Cashbox magazine of July 14, 1979 that reads, ""Syndications Indications -- Air Time and Studio Jam, Inc. have together formed Studio Jam Radio Network. Their 26 one-hour, bi-weekly rock concerts are recorded live in studios or actual performances and are currently being carried by 47 major market AOR stations. Already recorded are Journey, Ian Hunter, Tycoon, Jay Ferguson, Police and Alice Cooper. A partial list of radio stations which have scheduled the series include: WPIX/New York, WLUP/Chicago, WYSP/Philadelphia, KSLQ/St. Louis, WKLS/Atlanta, KMEL/San Francisco and KTXQ/Dallas."
It is LIKELY but not confirmed that the show was from the run of shows at the Aragon Ballroom in May. The Studio Jam company was headquartered in the John Hancock Building in Chicago. Their shows were recorded in the Chicago area. The Wiki says Journey played May 16 to 20, but I only found newspaper references for the last three nights (May 18-20).
Given that the Comiskey concert was sponsored by WLUP-FM, and they are in the Cashbox blurb as a station carrying the show, it is likely that during that broadcast window of Aug. 1 to Aug. 15, WLUP-FM broadcast the Studio Jam show. The widely attributed date of August 9th may be the day they broadcast the concert. That was a Thursday, though, and radio stations were more likely to broadcast these pre-recorded concerts over the Friday/Saturday/Sunday weekend.

That is very interesting and sounds quite probable. I also have a short audio clip from 79 'Chicago' that is different from this show that I am unsure about. Steve Perry says Chicago at the beginning of the clip and it transitions into the Wheel in the sky intro, which seems different to the other shows so its not just an edit.DRaftervoi wrote:While this is widely attributed to Comiskey Park in August, that can't be correct.

This brought up an ancient memory from the old tape trading days......is anyone on here familiar with a Chicago '79 bootleg called "Aragon Nights"? I'm wondering if that might have been the source for the unnamed short clip you mentioned. I don't think I ever obtained the "Aragon Nights" boot, since I think whoever mentioned it said it was pretty rare and different from the Comiskey Park show. These memories date back probably 20 years or so, so the details are a little sketchy. Ring any bells?

Hi, Techtuts...
I've got a copy of the show from the Studio Jam radio reel to reel that included the cue sheet and program information. I can post a link here, but let me know if I should include (or not include) the music. I'm new here and don't know if music files are banned or not and I want to respect your rules

If it contains full studio/album songs its probably best to remove them, if it just has short clips it should be ok.DRaftervoi wrote:Hi, Techtuts...

Re: 1979-05-20 Chicago, IL
Changed the date, reasons below. Thanks to DRaftervoi for the info
In the show he says 'good evening' but Journey's set in The Loop's Day in the Park show started around 4pm. Also newspaper articles mention fireworks and balloons being set off during the end of Wheel In The Sky (also implied it was the finale). No fireworks audible in recording and Wheel In The Sky is not last.
In the interview he mentions July 4th is upcoming and interview is with Mitch Michaels who is in Chicago.
Blurb in the Cashbox magazine of July 14, 1979 that mentions the Journey show is already recorded.
Aragon Ballroom show was sponsored by Jam
