1980-10-13 Tokyo, Japan

Postby techtuts » Tue Feb 09, 2016 11:39 pm

Date: 13th October 1980
Location: Tokyo, Japan
Venue: Tokyo Kōsei Nenkin Kaikan (not 100% sure)
Few sources, lossy Pre-FM/SB, audience and TV

Source 1:
Format: FLAC (lossy sourced)
Source: Pre-FM/SB (Possibly low gen VHS audio rip)
Quality: A/A+
Good frequency response and stereo imaging. Let down by the fact it is lossy, also missing a few bits.
I am looking for a true lossless version of this (maybe low-gen VHS rip)
Also did a remaster which may hide some of the lossy artifacts a little and improve the sound a bit.

Track List:
01 Where Were You
02 Just The Same Way
03 Lovin' You Is Easy
04 Too Late
05 Of A Lifetime
06 Kohoutek
07 People and Places
08 Precious Time
09 Lights
10 Stay Awhile
11 Dixie Highway
12 Homemade Love
13 Anytime
14 Walks Like A Lady
15 Neal Schon Guitar Solo
16 La Do Da
17 Ross Valory Bass Solo
18 Steve Smith Drum Solo
19 Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'
20 Wheel In The Sky
21 Anyway You Want It
22 I'm Cryin'
23 Line Of Fire
24 Majestic

Source 2:
Format: FLAC
Source: Audience
Quality: B/B+ (Remaster is A-)
Same (or very similar) tracklist to one above
Fairly good frequency response and stereo imaging, a little noise and distortion.
A few bits patched with the SB, the very start, about 25s of Dixie Highway and from part way into I'm Cryin' until the end.

TV/Video Source
Source 1:
High gen DVD
This is the most circulating copy, has fairly poor video and audio
Also a link to the Bootradr 2012 remaster where this copy is synced to the better lossy stereo audio.

Source 2:
Low gen .avi (maybe 1st gen)
This is the lowest gen copy I have seen but is unfortunately a low bitrate .avi copy. It appears to have been made from a DVD copy (metadata mentions DVD). This technically has the best video (or would have had) but is lossy and has noticeable blocky artifacts. The audio is stereo but since it is lossy it is degraded.

Source 3: (New)
Lower gen DVD
This is the lowest gen copy I have seen in DVD format. This copy has good video quality and fairly decent mono audio. I think it may be just 1 generation from the source 2 copy.
Some minor issues: Audio (mainly high end) in first 10 mins fades in and out, video is slightly warped at the top of the frame and video occasionally drops out. Also some noise/distortion in very bright scenes.

Looking for higher quality VHS rip with stereo audio, was floating around a few years back (one copy on youtube)

Is this the version that was alluded to being on YouTube?

Register to view links, the copy in that link uses a lossy sourced audio. 'EwerLord' had the original VHS at some point.

Is this the concert Herbie mentions in an interview he did? He mentions a 1980 tokyo performance at the Sun Plaza as being Greg's last concert with the band and says it was one hell of a show!

This is a quote from that interview I'm thinking of:

"In 1980, when Gregg Rolie announced that he was gonna retire, and we were on the day of our last show ever with Gregg Rolie at the Sun Plaza in Tokyo. A video of that performance would knock your dick dead in the dirt..."

Would love to hear that one he's talking about
